Three Intentions for 2024

Do you remember 2022's Words of the Year? Merriam Webster selected gaslighting, and Oxford University Press chose goblin mode. I had to refresh my memory on goblin mode, too. It's slang for "unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy behavior." Neither goblin mode or gaslighting were positive or aspirational!

Fortunately this year's words are much more upbeat! Merriam Webster named authentic its Word of the Year, and Oxford University Press selected rizz as its Word of the Year.

Authentic is one of my favorite words, especially in the context of our authentic self. Our authentic self is the part of us that accepts everything in the present moment, the part that has an unlimited capacity for love, and the part that's the image of the Divine. I believe one of the greatest personal journeys to experience during our time on earth school is to discover and embrace our authentic self.

Unfortunately a lot of goblins get in the way of that journey. Here's a great example: when we're overwhelmed we operate in a kind of "waking sleep" where our ego -- which has had a lifetime of employment -- takes over. Our ego looks for ways to take sides, defend, and separate us from others. That's why checking in to ask, "Where is my authentic self?" throughout the day is so critical -- and why it's one of my Six Practices for High Performance.

Rizz, which is short for charisma, beat out Swiftie, prompt, and situationship to take the top honor from Oxford University Press. In addition to rizz's colorful backstory, I just love saying the word! Plus, when my authentic self is present I'm more likely to show up with a healthy amount of rizz.

Because I love the power of three, I'll add one more word to authentic and rizz: recalibration, which is the process of making necessary adjustments to bring something back to an optimal or desired state. That word caught my eye when I read Pantone's announcement of their Color of the Year, peach fuzz. According to Pantone’s executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, “Peach Fuzz brings belonging, inspires recalibration, and an opportunity for nurturing. Drawing comfort from PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, we can find peace from within, impacting our wellbeing.

As we prepare for the new year, I hope you'll have time to recalibrate. Here's one of my favorite ways to do that: I love doing something for the first time, especially when that something evokes awe and wonder. Awe and wonder are powerful and transformative experiences that enhance our sense of well-being, inspire creativity, and encourage a deeper connection to the world around us.

Last month I traveled to Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, to attend my first Packers home game. Walking in and seeing the field for the first time generated a wow moment as I reflected on the history of the stadium and the contributions the Packers have made to the sport. I sat down at our seats, and for a solid half hour I just took it all in. I also discovered that Packers fans have a tremendous of authenticity and rizz. And yes, I will definitely return to the frozen tundra!

Showing up authentically, injecting some rizz, and making time for moments of recalibration are my three intentions for 2024. I hope they inspire you to set your intentions, too.

Before signing off, a big thank for reading this blog, thank you for sharing it, and thank you for your feedback and suggestions. For all of that -- and for the individuals and teams who invited me to jump in their corner this year -- I am profoundly grateful.
